Overview of hospital building now and in the future

Investments of billions and the best possible health for money

18. April 2012, Copenhagen, Denmark

In the coming years, the Danish healthcare sector and construction industry need to find solutions that create the best environment for the new Danish hospitals across the country, and therefore knowledge sharing and exchange of experiences across borders is completely necessary. The conference focus this year is: Why do we prioritize the way we do, and whom we can learn from?

We have asked a number of Danish and international experts to talk about the challenges you may have to face when you need to build and plan for future hospital construction in the 21st century.

This year you can hear the following speakers among others:

  • Dr. Awatif Ali Abuhaliga, Head of Policy Strategy and Planning, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai
  • Karen Parent, CEO, Workflow Integrity Network Inc., Canada
  • Christine Nickle-Weller, Professor, Technical University Berlin, Germany
  • Richard Mazuch, Director of Design Research and Innovation, Nightingale Associates, London, England
  • Per Hasvold, Researcher, National Center for interaction and Telemedicine, University Hospital North Norway HF, Tromsø, Norway
  • Menno Hinkema, Dutch Centre for Health Assets, Ducha / TNO, Netherlands
  • Jeanet Lemche, Business PHD student, Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics, University of Southern Denmark
  • Gunnar Stumo, Project Manager, Hospitalitet as, Norway
  • Peter Atkinson, Director (International), Driver, trading name of Driver Consult Ltd, a member of the Driver Group of companies, London

You can read more about the conference speakers here. The desriptions are in English. The webpage will be updated continously with more descriptions and pictures.

Who should participate:

Building owners and employees in the hospital sector and the regions involved in construction, operation and development, client consultants, architects, consultants, contractors, subcontractors and other operators who wants to get a thorough insight into the latest knowledge on construction of hospitals and health buildings in Denmark and internationally.

Over the last few years, several hundred decision makers from the Nordic building and hospital sector have participated in our conference on the future of hospitals, and we look forward to seeing even more again this year.

Both Danish and international experts will give their opinions on how we solve tomorrow's challenges. A number of presentations on the conference day will be in English – and there will also be an interpreter for the Danish and Norwegian presentations the same day, so international participants have the opportunity to understand all the presentations.

Conference day on 18 April 2012: The Future of Hospital Construction - Overview of Hospital Construction Now and in the Future (in English, and with translation of Danish/Norwegian presentations into English)

Lessons Learned from Hospitals in Dubai

One of the world’s fastest growing societies can be proud of having one of the world’s best health care systems. The teamwork when building hospitals are functioning on a different level from what we know in the Nordic countries, and Dubai has been capable of engaging some of the world’s leading specialists to plan, design and build their hospitals. Which important experiences have the Dubai Health Authorities had when it comes to planning and designing hospitals of the future? What have been the greatest challenges and which are the most successful innovations? And finally; how do they prioritize?

Dr. Awatif Ali Abuhaliga, Head of Policy Strategy and Planning, Dubai Health Authority

09:50 – 10:40

Using Function Analysis - An Innovative Work-Sampling Tool to inform Evidence-Based Design

The session presents Function Analysis™ as a unique decision-support technique for informing facility design and suggests it is a useful methodology for understanding factors that may optimize and/ or hinder healthcare facility design outcomes. Several examples of the use of Function Analysis will be shared based on data collected from hospitals engaged in the design and build of new units and facilities in British Columbia and Ontario, Canada. The findings from the quantitative data collected revealed that numerous outcomes (patient safety, productivity, staff satisfaction and the patient care experience) can be influenced by space as well as the models of care. Interventions to address the space, processes, people and technology will be discussed.

Karen Parent, CEO, Workflow Integrity Network Inc., Canada

10:40 – 11:00 Break with coffee / tea and delicacies

Marketplace with hospital projects presented by architects

11:00 – 11:40

Use of Existing Buildings

Cases from Germany

Christine Nickl-Weller, Professor, Technische Universität Berlin, Tyskland

11:40 – 12:30

Innovative Thinking and Hospital Friendly Design

International healthcare is constantly evolving in many aspects from design, process, modalities, technology, to patient experience, safety and risk. In this international period of austerity, shared innovative thinking is essential from the macro to the meso and the micro aspects of healthcare – from Development Control Planning to Space Utilization studies to car parking issues, waiting problems, door design, increasing bed numbers, ward isolation, infection control etc. How can we resolve these issues as well as achieve better healthcare outcomes, accelerating recovery and reducing risk?

Richard Mazuch, Director of Design Research and Innovation, Nightingale Associates London, England

12:30 – 13:15 Lunch
13:15 – 14:00 Telemedicine is not to be discarded!

This presentation will focus on the challenges that health care systems are facing and point out that it must make some dramatic changes in how these services are provided, so that the community is able to master this task in the future:
• Future-proofing, many engineering systems are built and put into service without having made a necessary "future-proofing" in relation to important factors that could affect the system in the expected lifetime of the system
• Technology and health care - some examples of how technology can help to solve the challenges, with examples that are available today and in the near future, and some examples of technologies that is a bit further forward in time.
• An attempt to draw conclusions from the consequences of this for design and layout of buildings (residential and institutional buildings)

Per Hasvold, NST - a research and resource center, Norway (the presentation will be in English)
14:00 – 14:30 Break with coffee / tea and delicacies

Marketplace with hospital projects presented by architects
14:30 – 15:15

The Future of Hospital Infrastructure

• What is a hospital? Changing currents in thoughts

• Pressures and trends in Dutch and Northern Ireland health services delivery

• Design responses – strategies and examples

• The road ahead – wrap up and questions

Menno Hinkema, Researcher, Dutch Center for Health Assets, DuCHA/TNO, Holland

15:15 – 16:00 How architecture can help to prevent stress in the patient

• The patient and the experienced perception of stress - the inevitable?
• Symptoms of illness - a targeting of health architecture?
• Patient involvement in the design process - who, what, where, when and why?
• Where and when can standards and generalizations be applied?

Jeanet Lemche, Business PhD student - Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics, University of Southern Denmark (the presentation will be in Danish, but with translation into English)

16:00 – 16:45 The structured building process during hospital construction

Where to find inspiration to manage hospital buildings?
